Half-inch diameter plugs of thatch and soil are actually pulled from the ground during this process, allowing for better air, water, and nutrient soil penetration which will promote a deeper, healthier root system. When aerating your lawn, we perform two passes across all areas, which create even more holes in the soil. The “cores” are left on the surface on your lawn and will break down after a couple weeks, recycling more nutrients back down into the soil.
Can I seed with an aeration?
Over-seeding can also be added to the soil aeration process for established lawns to introduce new cultivars of grass species to the lawn and help it to grow even thicker. Likewise, topdressing a lawn with organic compost and topsoil during the aeration process can improve the quality of your soil as well. Aeration and over-seeding is recommended for minor turf density problems, and to keep a lawn thick over the years. If you lawn has areas that are very thin and/or bare, we may recommend slice-seeding or other seeding methods to help grass to establish better for those locations. Core aeration can be performed in either spring or fall, but fall is preferred when also incorporating seeding. If you don’t need seeding added to aerating your lawn, we are even capable performing core aeration into the early winter, as long as we can pull sufficient cores from your lawn. Be sure to let us know if you have an underground irrigation system or an invisible dog fence. We can still perform core aeration for properties with these, but we will request that you have the service that installed or maintains those systems mark them in advance so we can perform your core aeration to your lawn without damaging those systems.
