How do I know if my lawn is afflicted with insect damage?
Damage will vary depending upon what insects are feeding on your lawn. Follow these tips to inspect your lawn for insect damage:
Grub Damage: Grubs damage will start to appear in late summer into fall. Areas may appear to lose color or not green back up when weather starts to become more favorable to lawns. Grab a hold of the grass. If it pulls up like a piece of carpet and you see grubs underneath, it’s grub damage. If you’re finding damage you will need a Corrective Grub Control treatment and will most likely need to seed lawn areas. If you are finding a couple stray Grubs in the spring, it is very unlikely they will damage your lawn in the spring. However, make sure you get a Preventive Grub Control treatment in the spring to prevent the damage later in the year.
Chinch Bugs, Billbugs, & Sod Webworm Damage: These insects feed on the surface, not below like Grubs. They will be found most times in the thatch layer in late spring through early fall. Areas will start to lose color and can sometimes even look chewed-off or wilted. You will need to get down on your hands and knees and be very patient. Look at areas that are at the edges of where the lawn is turning brown. Surface insects often start in a healthy area and keep spreading into healthy ones. Chinch bugs are very small, about 1/8″ in size and may appear to hop from blade to blade. Sod Webworms are small larvae, about 1/2″ and often create small holes in the soil and silk-lined tunnels. Billbug larvae will appear almost like a miniature grub, only at around 3/8″ and will not have legs like a grub.
